Let’s get one thing straight — this isn’t your average garden variety MX-5. In fact, were not even sure you could call it an MX-5 at all. . What you’re looking at is a flame-popping, turbo-spooling, razor-sharp roadster that’s been rebuilt from the block back to deliver the sort of experience that will make you a better driver.
The NB MX-5 has always been the purist’s pick — light, agile, and endlessly rewarding.
From factory, these cars tipped the scales at just 1,065kg and made around 104kW (140hp) from their 1.8L four-cylinder. That was enough for an 8.5 second sprint to 100km/h and a top speed in the low 200s. Not earth-shattering numbers, but the point of the NB was balance — 50/50 weight distribution, razor-sharp steering, and the kind of analogue feel that modern cars can only dream about.
After a decade (or thereabouts) of ownership, this publican decided he was a bit jack of the low power philosophy and (unlike many of us who just sell the car); he started to build an another version of the MX-5. An improved version. A fast version. Starting with a fresh SE block, the motor was sent off to Boost Automotive for a no-corners-cut build: forged pistons and rods, heavy-duty balanced crank and bearings, uprated valve springs, oversize piston rings — all spec’d for serious boost…and serious revs! Breathing upgrades include custom manifolds, RX-8 injectors, a Garrett next-gen two-stage turbo and a Haltech ECU, exhaling through a bespoke 2.5” stainless system. The result? 177.3kW at the wheels — nearly double the factory figure and well beyond even Mazda’s own rare Mazdaspeed Turbo NB, which made just 133kW at the crank. Yet, thanks to clever tuning, it remains easy to drive. On low boost (6psi) it’s docile, perfectly streetable and almost stock-like in manners.
Flick it over to the high-boost map (12psi) and it comes alive — sharper, harder, and properly quick. These numbers not quite getting you excited? Fear not… the motor and bolts on were selected in order to be capable of 18psi and a 9,000rpm limiter, but the current owner wisely kept it tuned at a low boost setting for longevity and reliability. Supporting hardware matches the power: Upgrade suspensions, upgraded brakes, cooling upgrades and a high-flow fuel pump round out the package. What you end up with is a car that keeps the NB’s featherweight, balanced soul intact, while delivering the punch of a modern turbo hot hatch — only with far more character.
Please note there are some flaws/defects around the car, as it has been used for its intended purpose. The soft top has a small tear (which has been sealed), the car has been vinyl wrapped (professionally and to a high quality standard) and the red leather interior shows some signs of its age.(no cracks, holes or other damage, the padding has just retracted/compressed slightly as they are want to do over time).
There are also no service books, these were lost long ago, but in their place is a comprehensive file of receipts detailing everything from a set of spark plugs in 2011 to the most recent service in 2025. And seeing as the whole car has essentially been rebuilt from top to bottom, we dont think there’s much of a detriment to that!
We have factored this in to the advertised pricing.
This isn’t just a turbo MX-5. It’s a carefully thought-out build that can be daily driven, track-day tested, or kept as the ultimate weekend toy.
