An S Class to go offroad in… The x164 GL500 was the only model where Mercedes offered a NA (non turbo) v8 in a full sized SUV. They drive completely differently then the newer turbos models and in my mind exude the attitude of a true AMG! To top it all of this is essentially built off of an S-Class platform. So the fitout of the interior is really without competition for any car of its vintage (or even most that are decades newer) All leather everything, excellent Harmon Kardon Sound system, 4 zone climate control, a Third row an adult can sit in comfortably (electrically operated of course) and the list goes on and on and on.
Just as capable as a Landcruiser, except half the price… When we were in the market for a Large SUV we looked at plenty of Landcruisers. Whilst they are a lovely car, and Im sure they have many advantages over the Mercedes, on paper and in my driving opinion the Mercedes is simply superior in every way!
Low Kilometres… At under 198,000 km, this SUV is built to last and has plenty of life left in it!
Service History… You name it and we’ve done it. Our GL500 comes complete with more then $25,000 worth of receipts during the course of our ownership. When something has broken, or started to wear, we have always fixed the issue with the highest specification (or genuine) part. This car has been loved by all in our family and treated accordingly.
An example of this is the suspension. Airmatic is known to fail, so when we spotted some leaky shocks and tired air springs we threw the Bilstein catalogue at the car and spent about $12,000 on that alone! The ride quality is absolutely superb and yes the car has about 80mm of height adjustability from inside the cabin.
Tyre Upgrade… New Yokohama all-terrain tyres, ready for that weekend away with the fam’
No Radio Required (but it has a great stereo too)… Custom cat-back exhaust, for when you need to let someone know (for safety reasons) that you are about to overtake them 😉
A blend of character, performance, and a surprising amount of practicality is on offer with this vehicle.
After years of faithful service the time has come to part with our beloved GL500. This car drives better then it looks and I have absolutely not doubt that its next owner will be in love the minute they see it!
It took me a very long time to find the perfect car, in the best possible condition. It’s the little things that make this car so brilliant. For example; Black on Black Interior/Exterior Combo, no screens (they look so dated…) on seats, tow bar never fitted, local car, maintenance history etc etc… I am pleased to offer the next owner what is in my opinion one of the best examples of this model I have ever seen.
We will be very sad to see this one go, but the time has come for something different. Plates not included in sale.
