USABLE, UNRESTORED CLASSIC | FIRST YEAR OF THE R107 SERIES | ORIGINAL PAINTWORK | WHITE INTERIOR | REPLACED MOTOR
This is where the legend began. The R107 series was introduced in 1971, replacing the iconic W113 “Pagoda” SL and immediately setting a new benchmark for luxury grand touring. Sleek, elegant, and engineered with Mercedes’ typical overbuild, the R107 went on to become one of the longest-running models in Mercedes history, remaining in production for nearly two decades. To own a first-year R107 is to hold the genesis of a design icon. How much does. aPagoda cost these days? You’d best have almost $200k in your back burner if you want to obtain that particular experience!
Offered here is a 1972 Mercedes-Benz 350SL Roadster (3.5L V8, 3-speed auto) showing 345,072 km. At approximately 310,000 km the original motor was replaced with a lower-mileage 3.5 V8, ensuring the car continues to run and drive strongly. Recently, its original paint has been painstakingly refreshed, bringing it back to its previous brilliance. This is a rare opportunity to get into the R107 market relatively inexpensively with the opportunity to build some sweet equity into the car!
The car remains largely (if not completely) original, with no aftermarket interference. It comes without a hardtop, but with a soft top that, while showing signs of repair, is still fully operable.
The car has been in the hands of a specialist Mercedes mechanic for the last 15 years, cherished as part of a private collection. With his decision to reduce the stable, this SL is ready to move to its next custodian. Whilst the car service books and delivery books have long since been misplaced, the car has clearly received regular maintenance at the hand of the skilled previous owner.
The 350SL combines timeless styling with the smoothness of a V8, making it equally suitable as a collectible or a usable weekend tourer. Early R107s are increasingly sought after, particularly first-year examples like this one – both for their significance and purist charm.
Note: Whilst complete, we are still cleaning and reassembling some of the interior. Updated photos depicting the finished interior will be posted once finished. Car is on non-transferrable registration and will as such be sold unregistered, or registered in TAS on full rego at the Buyers expense.
