The Mercedes-Benz R107 SL is one of the most recognisable and desirable classics of the 1970s and 1980s. Running from 1971 through to 1989, it was one of Mercedes’ longest production models, chosen by celebrities, royals and rockstars alike — Frank Sinatra, Princess Diana, David Bowie, John Travolta, and Grace Kelly all had one. But with just 11,822 500SL’s produced globally over the years, finding one in good Nic these days is no small feat.
The 500SL was the flagship of the range. Its 5.0-litre V8 produced 177 kW (240 hp) and 402 Nm, good for a 0–100 km/h sprint in the mid-7s and a top speed of 225 km/h. In the early ’80s, that put it shoulder to shoulder with the Ferrari 308 GTS and Jaguar XJ-S V12, yet it offered a level of refinement and durability those rivals couldn’t match.
Unlike many contemporaries, the SL was as happy pulling up at a restaurant as it was crossing Europe at Autobahn speeds. This example, finished in a timeless pale blue with its factory removable hardtop, has been professionally resprayed and presents beautifully.
Beneath the surface, extensive recent mechanical work ensures the engine runs strong and the car drives as Stuttgart intended. You could happily tackle a 1000 km road trip tomorrow, or roll into a car & coffee event with equal confidence. The interior shows light patina and would benefit from some refreshing, but the car remains a very usable and enjoyable classic — exactly how the R107 was meant to be experienced.
The car does not drop any oil, consume any coolant or have any known mechanical issues. Having been owned by the same family for over a decade this car has been much loved and well pampered. The R107 follows the iconic Pagoda W113, which has already soared into six-figure territory.
Collectors are turning their attention to the R107, with the 500SL particularly sought after as the most powerful European-market model. Built in Mercedes’ golden era of “over-engineering,” the 500SL combines prestige, safety innovations (crumple zones, reinforced passenger cell, ABS brakes), and unmatched build quality.
