Growing up is overrated.
One day you’re clipping apexes in a weekend toy. The next you’re measuring prams, fitting child seats and wondering whether you’ll ever own another fun car.
Fortunately, someone at Audi had the same dilemma.
Meet the 2017 Audi SQ5. The family SUV for people who still glance back after parking.
While Australians fell in love with the original diesel SQ5, Audi quietly changed the recipe when the second-generation B9 arrived. Out went the diesel and in came the turbocharged 3.0-litre TFSI petrol V6. Smoother, more eager to rev and blessed with enormous tuning potential, it quickly became the enthusiast’s choice.
The irony? Although every 2017 B9 SQ5 sold here was petrol-powered, the roads were still dominated by thousands of first-generation diesel SQ5s. Even today, most people still think “SQ5” means diesel. Those who know better seek out cars like this.
And this isn’t just any petrol SQ5.
The legendary 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 has been professionally enhanced with 034Motorsport ECU and TCU software, lifting output to an estimated 321kW and approximately 650Nm. The recalibrated transmission delivers quicker, sharper shifts while the custom exhaust gives the V6 the soundtrack it always deserved.
The numbers speak for themselves.
With around 90kW more than a standard SQ5, this example has the performance to comfortably run alongside much newer SUVs such as a Porsche Macan GTS, while costing tens of thousands less. Quattro all-wheel drive puts every kilowatt to work, launching the SQ5 from 0-100km/h in approximately 4.7 seconds before continuing to its electronically limited 250km/h top speed.
The lowered suspension and stunning 22-inch flow-forged wheels give the SQ5 genuine presence. It sits lower, looks tougher and feels every bit as capable as the performance figures suggest, yet remains perfectly civilised for the daily commute.
Step inside and you’re reminded why Audi has built a reputation for some of the finest interiors in the industry. Beautiful diamond-stitched Fine Nappa leather sports seats combine luxury with support, while the Bang & Olufsen premium audio system turns every drive into a private concert.
The panoramic glass sunroof floods the cabin with natural light, heated electric front seats with driver memory, keyless entry and push-button start, three-zone climate control, satellite navigation, front and rear parking sensors with reversing camera, electric tailgate and Audi Drive Select ensure it feels every bit the premium SUV, whether you’re tackling the morning school run or heading away for the weekend.
Perhaps our favourite feature isn’t listed on the options sheet.
It’s the service history.
This SQ5 has been maintained exactly as an Audi performance vehicle should be, backed by a full Audi dealer service history from new. Major scheduled maintenance has already been completed, including spark plugs, brake fluid services, inspection services, air and cabin filters, ribbed belt replacement and factory campaigns. It presents beautifully inside and out and drives every bit as tightly as you’d expect from a meticulously cared-for example.
We hear it all the time.
“I sold the sports car because life got in the way.”
Kids happened.
The dog arrived.
The caravan followed.
Weekends became sport, birthdays and hardware stores.
This SQ5 is proof that practicality doesn’t have to come at the expense of passion.
It carries the family in comfort. Swallows luggage with ease. Tackles any weather with confidence. Then, when the road opens up, reminds you exactly why you became a car enthusiast in the first place.
Maybe the weekend toy had to go… but, maybe it just came back wearing five doors.
