“KOENIG SPECIAL” WIDEBODY | 400hp & 600nm LS1 | DOGLEG MANUAL TRANSAXLE G’BOX REBUILT | REFURB’D BBS MESH | REFRESHED INTERIOR | $80K OF RECEIPTS
This 1988 Porsche 928 Koenig Special is one of those vehicles that stops people in their tracks. Built over the course of 15 years by its passionate owner Terry, it represents thousands of hours of careful planning, engineering and craftsmanship. Offered only because age is beginning to limit future enjoyment, it is now ready for its next custodian.
The Koenig Specials conversion was one of the wildest and most expensive body conversions available during the 1980s. Produced by the legendary German tuning house Koenig Specials, the transformation widened the already dramatic Porsche 928 by more than 200mm through a genuine 12-piece widebody conversion. This example is believed to wear an authentic Koenig kit, giving it the unmistakable supercar presence that made these cars famous during the excess of the late 1980s.
Originally imported from Hong Kong, the car has since been professionally converted to right-hand drive and, in keeping with an enthusiast-focused build, converted from automatic to manual using a genuine Porsche 928 dogleg transaxle. The result is a far more engaging driving experience while retaining the excellent weight distribution that made the 928 such an accomplished grand tourer.
When the original Porsche V8 eventually reached the end of its life, Terry chose a practical path rather than an expensive restoration. The car was engineered with a Chevrolet LS1 V8, is fully street legal and correctly plated, and now produces approximately 450 horsepower thanks to quality headers, a custom exhaust system and ECU tune. The soundtrack is every bit as memorable as the appearance, delivering effortless performance with the reliability and parts availability that have made the LS platform famous.
Unlike many highly modified classics, this Koenig is genuinely enjoyable to drive. It starts, idles and cruises with confidence, making it a car you could comfortably use on weekends or even daily if you chose. It combines the theatre of an exotic with the dependability of modern V8 power.
Its stance is completed by period-correct BBS mesh wheels measuring 15×8 inches at the front and an enormous 15×11 inches at the rear, wrapped in near-new 225 and massive 345-section tyres that perfectly fill the widened guards.
Inside, the cabin has benefited from extensive refurbishment including significant upholstery work, new carpeting and refreshed interior trim, creating an environment that feels far more special than many modified classics of this era.
The exterior has also received extensive restoration work before being protected, while an era-inspired motorsport livery has been applied that perfectly suits the outrageous Koenig aesthetic. As expected of a hand-built project that has been enjoyed, the paint presents well overall but does retain some minor imperfections and age-related flaws.
Perhaps the most impressive aspect of this build is the documentation. Accompanying the car is approximately $80,000 worth of receipts, meticulously catalogued by Terry throughout the build, providing an exceptional record of the work undertaken over the past decade and a half.
Finding a genuine Koenig-bodied Porsche is rare enough. Finding one that has been thoughtfully engineered, professionally converted to right-hand drive, fitted with a manual gearbox, powered by a reliable LS1 and backed by such comprehensive documentation is rarer still.
Whether you’re looking for an unforgettable Cars & Coffee centrepiece, an event car, or simply one of the most outrageous road-going Porsches you’ll ever own, this 928 Koenig delivers an experience unlike anything else.
