Well at least not at BMW.
When BMW’s M Division was asked to build a family SUV, they could have taken an X5 and made it a little quicker, a little sharper and called it a day. Nope.
Instead, they fitted a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, gave it 412kW and 680Nm, and created a two-and-a-half tonne luxury SUV capable of 0-100km/h in just 4.7 seconds. School run? Absolutely. Overtaking road trains? Also absolutely. Towing a commercial airliner? Could start in second.
This 2012 X5 M has travelled 153,000km and is exactly the sort of example enthusiasts hope to find. It comes with a full service history, was previously owned by a mechanic, remains completely factory standard, and presents in excellent condition inside and out.
Leaving the car stock is becoming increasingly rare, and that’s part of its appeal. You get the engineering exactly as BMW M intended, while also having one of the best tuning platforms BMW has ever produced. The legendary S63 V8 responds exceptionally well to modifications, with a quality Stage 1 tune capable of producing around 500kW, and substantially more available with supporting upgrades if you decide factory power simply isn’t enough.
It’s luxurious, practical, comfortable and refined… right up until you bury your right foot. Then it becomes something entirely different.
For around $33,000, you’ll struggle to find another vehicle that offers this combination of performance, practicality and presence. It still turns heads, still sounds fantastic, and still delivers the sort of acceleration that makes passengers check whether you’ve accidentally selected launch mode.
