We absolutely hate this cars name. I mean, surely this was the absolute peak of BMW’s terrible naming conventions – Z4 E89 MY0312 sDrive35is. Fortunately, thanks to this cars extensive history, we know its original rego. BTRCUP.
Introducing – Buttercup. Buttercup is the top of the E89 Z4 line, running the twin-turbo 3.0L straight-six with 250 kW and 500 Nm. The power is delivered through the 7-speed dual-clutch “sport” gearbox, firing off quick shifts when you’re pushing on but settling down into smooth refinement when you’re cruising. The N54 is paired to the crisp 7-speed dual-clutch (DCT), firing off shifts that feel telepathic and launching the Z4 to 100 km/h in the high-4s. This is the top-spec 35is, with adaptive M suspension and the sharper factory calibration that gives it that mega M-Car surge.
Dont let the good road manners fool you though, Buttercup will wreck a pair of rears quicker then you can google the cost of a Michelin Pilot Sport 4S, if you so desire.
Finished in the extremely rare Atacama Yellow with the BMW Individual Design Pure Impulse interior, this Z4 really stands out. We’ve been told that less then 280 cars in a similar specification were made worldwide.
Inside you’ll find Alcantara/leather in Circuit Black, Sports Seats (with bolster adjustment), an anthracite headlining, and the obligatory M leather steering wheel with integrated shift paddles.
Outside, the M Aerodynamics package and LA Wheel Star Spoke 295 alloys give it the look to match the performance, while the Adaptive M Chassis keeps it planted (most of the time) and sharp without sacrificing comfort.
The folding hardtop means you’ve got the best of both worlds: coupe practicality when you want it, and roof-down fun when the weather calls.
Interestingly, the rear section fold under the front in order to optimise luggage compartment space. All electrical functions of the car continue to work as intended by the manufacturer.
Buttercup has clearly been exceptionally well looked after, with an exceptionally tidy interior/exterior and plenty of documented service history.
A roadworthy inspection has just been completed and the car will be sold on full transferrable Tasmanian registration.
A comprehensive service has just been completed, including some major maintenance, so you can rest assured that Buttercup will be ready to rack up the KM’s without any hassle.
This was the last Z4 to carry the hardtop design before BMW moved on to the shared Supra platform — making it not just a fantastic driver’s car, but the end of an era in BMW roadsters. Whilst the Supra is an undeniably good car, we’re awfully fond of a Z – and the new platform isn’t quite the same thing.
