Grey normally means boring. Not anymore!
This 2021 BMW 128ti combines genuine hot-hatch performance with a generously equipped cabin and everyday practicality. Finished in Storm Bay metallic over black perforated Dakota leather, it has travelled just 42,000km and benefits from an impeccable service history through its original dealer and a BMW marque specialist.
Under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 180kW and 380Nm, paired with an eight-speed Steptronic Sport automatic and steering-wheel paddles. BMW quotes 0–100km/h in 6.3 seconds, giving this practical five-door hatch plenty of enthusiasm when called upon. And yes, it’s the same engine as used in the heavier, AWD M135. Makes sense why the 128ti makes about 2kw more when stage 1 tuned…228kW, with nearly 100kg less to worry about, would make the competition between those two brothers an interesting one!
The chassis has received just as much attention as the drivetrain. A Torsen mechanical limited-slip differential helps the front wheels put the power down, while specifically tuned M Sport suspension and bespoke steering calibration give the 128ti its distinct character. M Sport brakes with high-gloss red calipers provide the stopping hardware to match. Yep – those are big 4 piston callipers on the front – compared to the GTI’s… one.
This example has an especially appealing cabin specification. Its M Sport seats are trimmed in black perforated Dakota leather, with electric adjustment, a memory function, front-seat heating and lumbar support for both driver and front passenger. A heated steering wheel adds another welcome touch for chilly mornings.
Illuminated Brooklyn interior trim, an anthracite headlining and M seat belts give the cabin a suitably sporting finish. BMW Live Cockpit Professional and a head-up display keep key information close at hand, while the HiFi speaker system, DAB digital radio and enhanced smartphone connectivity take care of entertainment and communication.
Adaptive LED headlights with high-beam assistance, Driving Assistant, Active Guard Plus, dynamic cruise control and Parking Assistant add everyday convenience and driver assistance. Automatic climate control, electrically folding exterior mirrors, auto-dimming mirrors and a tyre-pressure display round out the equipment.
Practicality is well covered by a powered tailgate, through-loading rear-seat arrangement, storage compartment package and luggage net. Sun-protection glazing provides additional privacy, while the five-door layout makes this an easy car to live with.
Outside, BMW 554M alloy wheels, high-gloss Shadow Line detailing, the M Aerodynamics package and M rear spoiler complement the Storm Bay finish. It’s a cohesive factory specification with plenty for an enthusiast to appreciate.
The “ti” badge stands for Turismo Internazionale, continuing a BMW sporting tradition dating back to the 1960s. Here, that heritage comes in a compact package with low kilometres, excellent servicing credentials and a particularly appealing equipment list.
Inspections, demonstrations and third party checks are all welcome.
